Goethe Test B1 – listening comprehension

Goethe Test B1 is a central exam; for all of its listening exercises or tests, it is important that you read and understand all the exercises before the text begins. Students must either be experienced or quickly learn what they need to do in each section. The Listening module consists of four sections, each lasting a maximum of 40 minutes. This module is definitely 10 minutes longer than Goethe A2 Test and 20 minutes longer than Telc A2 Test. For this reason alone, you are advised to practice more to maintain your concentration.

Part 1

Part 1 combines true/false questions and multiple-choice questions. You will hear five different everyday texts from announcements at train stations, on board, at the airport, radio news, answering machine messages, automated telephone information, or weather reports. The texts are similar to many texts in A1 and A2, only slightly longer. They vary between 35 and 55 seconds. For each text you listen to, you’ll have to complete two tasks: a true/false task and multiple-choice questions. These test your detailed understanding as well as your general understanding, that is, whether you understand the topic in general and which details you understand. This combination is only available in Goethe Test B1 and Goethe Test B2. Two factors make this part difficult. The texts are longer than in Goethe A2 Test, and you have to answer two tasks for each text. Listening to each text twice makes it a little easier. Similar exercises aren’t included in the textbooks, and they require practice. So don’t miss the opportunity to practice on our web portal.

Part 2

This part in Goethe Test B1 usually involves a 3-minute lecture or guided tour. This lecture has 5 multiple-choice questions. The difficulty lies in the fact that you only hear the lecture or guided tour once. In this part, you must read through all the tasks and the corresponding multiple-choice options before you begin. At this stage, you’re definitely far from being able to read and listen to the task at the same time. The most difficult thing in a section like this is when you lose the thread and no longer know what the task is about while the presenter continues talking. In extreme cases, this can cost you the entire section.

Technique

1. Read the questions and identify the topic of the presentation or tour! 2. Highlight unfamiliar keywords in the tasks. These can sometimes be explained while listening. 3. Identify the guide through the tasks! This will help you while you listen. 4. Listen and answer at the same time. 5. If you mishear the presentation, i.e., you no longer know what it’s about, use the questions themselves to identify the interface you’re listening to, because the questions usually reflect a part of the presentation or tour. 6. If you can’t answer a question even though you’ve heard the relevant passage, don’t stop, but move on. If you don’t, you risk missing the following questions.

Part 3

You are listening to a dialogue, usually between two or three people, lasting a maximum of three minutes. For this dialogue, you must answer seven questions with “yes” or “no.” Note the following aspects: 1. You must read through all seven questions before the dialogue begins. 2. You can use the same technique in Part 2. 3. The wealth of information in this part shouldn’t cause you to lose track. 4. If you can’t answer a question like in Part 2, move on, otherwise you’ll lose the thread and won’t know what to answer, especially since you only hear it once in this part.

Part 4

In this part, you’ll hear a discussion on the radio. Three people are speaking: a presenter and two other guests, who usually have different opinions. You have to match eight statements to the three people in the conversation. What makes this part of Goethe Test B1 easy is that you listen to the program twice. But three other factors make it difficult: 1. What makes this task difficult is that you have to read all the statements before the discussion, memorize the people, and assign a voice to each person at the beginning of the program. A mix-up can mess up all your answers. 2. Furthermore, the discussion lasts up to six minutes, which is quite long. 3. A third factor makes this part challenging at the end of the exam, after your concentration has dropped considerably and you still have to master this long section. Despite everything, this part can be mastered with targeted practice.
