Goethe A2 Exam – listening comprehension

Goethe A2 Exam – Listening Comprehension consists of 4 parts and typically lasts 30 minutes.

Part 1

This part consists of 5 tasks with announcements, public announcements, and answering machine messages. Each announcement or message typically lasts up to 30 seconds. You will hear each message twice. This part of the Goethe A2 Exam is similar to Part 3 of the Goethe A1 exam, only slightly longer. This also confirms that you are graduating from the German exams.

Part 2

In this part, you will hear a dialogue lasting up to 1:40 seconds. The task is to match 5 people to the correct photo from 8 different pictures. In the official Goethe A2 Test, you have 9 photos and 6 people, but the correct photo is always assigned to the first person. The difficulty of this test lies in, first, the fact that you have to understand the entire context and, at the same time, find the right photo for each person. Second, sometimes the people speaking in the dialogue are actually people in the task, and they each need to be assigned a photo, and sometimes not, which can be confusing. Pay attention to possessive pronouns in this section. They make a difference in finding the right picture. Third, and this is the most difficult part, you have to do it all in one sitting because you only listen to this dialogue once. For these reasons, this part must be practiced several times.

Part 3

This part consists of five multiple-choice questions with five dialogues from everyday life. Each dialogue lasts up to 30 seconds and is heard once. This part of the Goethe A2 Exam builds on Part 1 of the Goethe Exam A1. In this part, unlike in A1, you only hear each text once. For more practice, you can use Telc A2 Test Part 3; the two parts are identical.

Part 4

This part consists of five yes/no questions about a radio dialogue or program. The broadcast lasts 2 minutes, but you’ll hear the conversation twice. For interviews or conversations, first read the tasks and possible answers to identify the topic of the potential conversation or discussion. Use the questions and answers to find the guiding thread you need to recognize during the conversation and help you respond. If you lose track of this, use any question of the moderator to get back into the swing of things, as the questions usually introduce a topic and relate to a question. In summary, the following points can be noted: 1. The listening module in the Goethe Exam A1 is about 10 minutes longer than in Telc A2 Test and just as short as in B1 Goethe Test. 2. The similarity to the A1 Goethe Exam, apart from the length, can only be seen in parts 1 and 3. 3. Parts 2 and 4 are unfamiliar and rarely appear in most textbooks, so they require practice. This is important because these two sections are the ones that appear in B1.
