6 Magical Tips for German Exams
Whether it’s the Goethe A1 Test or Goethe C1 Test, Telc A1 Test or Telc C1 Test, all German exams share certain similarities. Here we reveal tips and recommendations to make taking the tests easier.
1. Optimal test preparation begins with a German course, as a preparation course is no substitute for a German course. Many German learners learn German on their own, especially from level B1 onwards. If you are learning without a teacher or course, then you need thorough and extensive preparation. I strongly advise against learning German, particularly at the intermediate levels from A1 to B1, without a professional German course.
2. The German exams are developed in ascending order, starting with the Goethe A1 Test. Therefore, it is recommended to take the exams in ascending order. This doesn’t necessarily mean taking an official test, but you do need to complete a level test to help you assess your knowledge. The official test will tell you whether you’ve truly developed your language skills and deserve to move on to the next level.
3. Choosing the right format is entirely up to you. There’s no easy or difficult format, only a suitable one. For example, if you struggle with true/false questions, it makes less sense to take the Telc exam, as listening comprehension at all levels in Telc consists solely of true/false questions. 4. Preparation must be based on analysis and takes time. When you prepare, it should be based on a profile analysis. Knowing your profile precisely allows you to prepare effectively. Furthermore, you need to start early. The farther the exam date, the better. This gives you time to analyze your performance profile, identify weaknesses, and work on them.
5. Grammar is highly relevant for all German exams from A1 to C1 and should not be underestimated. Although grammar is only directly tested in Telc and, from Telc B1 onwards, through Sprachbausteine, it carries particular weight in the writing and speaking sections. Furthermore, grammar ensures a clear understanding of the tasks and texts in many exercises.
6. You must learn from your own experience. Mistakes and difficulties encountered in practice tests or exercises must be investigated and avoided. The learning and exam experiences of other German learners cannot be directly applied to you. The anxieties and euphoria of other German learners, as well as their statements, reflect subjective experiences, and you must examine these for yourself and certainly not adopt them.
