Goethe Exam B2 – listening comprehension

Goethe Exam B2 – listening comprehension

Goethe Exam B2 Listening Comprehension consists of four parts and lasts between 38 and 40 minutes. Given its length, the exam appears challenging and should not be underestimated.

Part 1

This part consists of five texts, mostly dialogues and radio news reports, with each text lasting up to 45 seconds. For each text, you must solve two tasks: a true/false question and a multiple-choice question. This part builds on Part 1 of Goethe test B1 and differs only in length and in the fact that you only hear these texts once. Normally, if you solve the multiple-choice question, you will be able to solve the true/false question. In other words, concentrate on the multiple-choice question, as it mostly requires detailed listening comprehension. Then, mark “True” or “False”!

Part 2

You will listen twice to approximately 4-minute interview with a well-known person about a scientific topic, on which you will solve 6 multiple-choice questions. The most important thing in this interview is to recognize the common thread throughout the conversation and to understand the possible answers even when reading through the questions and the possible answers for the first time. The technique we explained to you for Telc exam B2 Part 2 can work here with slight adjustments for this part of the Goethe exam B2.

Technique

1. You must first read the questions and memorize any prominent vocabulary or keywords. 2. By skimming through the questions, you must find out or guess the topic of the interview. 3. The first time you listen, the goal is to follow the common thread through the conversation and answer a few questions. 4. If you stumble on a question, don’t let it stop you! Walk away and try to get back into the conversation; such cases can be corrected or checked off in the second round. 5. During the second listening session, you must answer any remaining questions and ensure that you have answered the other questions correctly. 6. If you lose track, try to find the next keyword or idea to get back into the conversation. The moderator’s questions will also help you with this; you must listen carefully, as their questions usually lead from one task to another and help you find the thread through the questions and the interview.

Part 3

This part of Goethe exam B2 consists of a radio interview between a moderator and two other people, who usually represent different points of view. In this task, you have to match six statements to these three people in the exam. This part of the Goethe B2 exam also builds on B1 Part 4. However, in Goethe exam B2, you can only listen to the approximately four-minute discussion once. In our web portal, you have the statements on the left and a drop-down list on the right where you can select the right person.

Part 4

You will listen to a lecture twice, each lasting approximately 5 minutes. You will have to answer 8 multiple-choice questions. This part is considered quite complex and long, but listening to it twice will only make it easier.

Technique

1. Read all the questions and answer options before the text begins. 2. Highlight keywords in the questions and discover the theme and the guiding thread of the lecture! 3. In the first round, you must listen and answer simultaneously. 4. If you are unable to answer some questions in the first round, don’t let this discourage you and postpone the questions until the second round! 5. In the second round, you must answer all the questions and leave no questions unanswered! 6. If you lose track of the lecture, quickly look at the questions; they often reveal the structure of the main parts of the lecture.

Summary

The listening module in the Goethe exam B2 is quite long and demanding. The tasks appear manageable only for those who have already taken the Goethe test B1.
