Telc Test B1 – reading comprehension
Telc Test B1 begins with reading comprehension. You have 90 minutes for the entire Reading and Sprachbausteine module. Reading comprehension consists of 3 parts.
Part 1
The candidate must choose the appropriate heading from 10 possible headings for 5 information texts. What makes this task difficult?
1. The 5 information texts usually only cover 2 topics, meaning the texts have certain similarities.
2. The headings also have similarities.
Technique
We recommend the following approach:
1. Read the possible headings and identify the possible keywords so that you can differentiate between the headings.
2. Start reading the texts and find keywords that will narrow down the possible headings so that you can find the appropriate heading.
3. If you don’t immediately find a suitable heading for a text, move on, as some of the possible headings may be omitted during further processing, which you can then immediately assign to other information texts.
4. This will give you a narrower selection for each information text and help you make a better decision.
We also recommend using several colored markers to identify the keywords. Always use a different color for each keyword.
If you are taking the Telc B1 exam digitally, use an extra sheet of paper and a pen to write down at least the keywords and possible headings. In this context, I would like to point out that in the near future, all official exams will be held in electronic format only.
Part 2
This is a classic text with five multiple-choice questions that test your detailed reading ability. That is, your understanding of the precise information in the text. The text is similar to Part 2 of Telc A2 Test, but slightly longer and more complex. Telc A2 Test also deals with true-false questions, while B1 Goethe exam deals with multiple-choice questions. This part bears some similarities to parts 2 and 3, but the text here is almost twice as long.
Part 3
In this Part of Telc Test B1, you have to find the appropriate display for 10 people in 10 different situations among 12 displays. The situations have many similarities, as this part addresses two topics. Another factor makes this part more difficult: there is no appropriate display for one situation.
This part is similar to Part 3 in Telc A2 Test, except that the people and displays are duplicated. It is also similar to B1 Goethe exam Reading Part 4, where you have to deal with 7 people and 9 displays. This gives you a clear signal that you are investing a lot of time in this part, especially because you have to delve into the details of each display.
We also recommend working with colors or circles, triangles, squares, or underlines.
